Crochet – One Stitch at a time – Bunnies and Chicks

A couple of years ago I made these Bunny Egg Covers for Easter, I get them out every year still and a friend who saw them asked if she could have a punkier version and another asked for the pattern – as usual I had done it from my head and couldn’t remember.
So the only solution was to make some more and this time I took photos and notes along the way I even decided that chicks would be cute too.

Crochet Bunny Pattern

 Materials Used

Double Knitting wool, size 4 crochet needle, buttons, thread, things to decorate with.

 NOTES:

Work in continuous rounds; do not join or turn unless otherwise instructed.

STITCH EXPLANATION:sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Stitch Abbreviations

beg = begin(s)(ning) ch(s) = chain(s)
rep = repeat(s)(ing) rnd(s) = round(s)
sc = single crochet st(s) = stitch(es)

COZY
With Main Colour, chain 2.
Round 1: Work 4 sc in first chain. Place marker in first stitch for beg of round; move marker up as each round is completed. This will help if like me you get lost.

Round 2: Work 2 single crochet in each sc around – 8 sc.
Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around – 12 sc.
Round 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around – 16 sts. *

Rounds 5-14: Sc in each sc around.
Round 15: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around. Fasten off.

 * I found this was big enough for an average egg or Cream egg 🙂   but if you want larger keep increasing in the same manner.

EARS (make 2)
With Main colour, chain 2.
Round 1: Work 4 sc in first chain.
Round 2: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around – 6 sc.
Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around – 8 sts.
Rounds 4-8: Sc in each st around. Fasten off.

To Finish
 Sew the ears to the cosy and add eyes I used buttons and googly eyes and sewed them using thread.
 Decorate with anything you like to make them individuals and add a nose by either sewing with wool or adding a bead.
You can even add pom pom tails.

To make Little Chick

 Make the Cosy section in the same way as above but instead of ears we will be making wings.

Wings – make 2

Chain 7 to begin.

Row 1 : starting in the second chain from the hook, work the following stitches…
dc, htr, tr, htr, dc (as pictured above)
Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2 :: starting in the second chain from the hook, work the following stitches…
dc, htr, tr, htr, dc (as pictured above)
Chain 1, but don’t turn the work
To complete the shape, turn it upside down so that the foundation chain is at the top. Work your way along, crocheting dc stitches into the outer loops of the foundation chain.
When you get near to the end of the foundation chain, continue working a few stitches around the end until it looks neat and you meet the beginning of the previous row, fasten off.

Sew wings on the body, add a beak, I made mine out of card and add eyes to finish off.

They are fairly easy to make and quite quick to complete and fun for the Easter breakfast table.
